The San Francisco 49ers are staring down a free agency cliff in 2026, and it’s going to be a fascinating, potentially brutal, offseason. General Manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan have built a consistent winner, but keeping the band together for another Super Bowl push will require some Solomon-like decisions. Over 20 key players are currently slated to hit the open market, and not all of them are getting big extensions.
Brock Purdy’s contract situation is the elephant in the room. He's still on that ridiculously team-friendly seventh-round rookie deal, earning just over $1 million in 2024 and 2025. But come 2026, Purdy is eligible for a massive extension. Given his performance – 4,280 passing yards and 31 touchdowns in 2023, leading the league in QBR (72.7) – he’s going to command top-tier quarterback money. Think north of $50 million annually. The Niners have to decide if that’s the kind of investment they want to make in a quarterback who, while productive, still has doubters about his ceiling. They paid Christian McCaffrey $16 million a year, Deebo Samuel $23.8 million, and Nick Bosa $34 million. Where does Purdy fit in that hierarchy, financially? And what does that mean for everyone else?
The defensive side of the ball is where things get really tricky. Talanoa Hufanga, the All-Pro safety from 2022, is a pending free agent. He tore his ACL in Week 11 of the 2023 season, clouding his market value. Before the injury, he was a key piece, racking up 97 tackles and 4 interceptions in 2022. Will the 49ers extend him before he hits the market, or gamble on a prove-it deal elsewhere? Arik Armstead, who restructured his deal in March 2024 to stay, will have another year under his belt, but his cap hit will still be substantial. Fred Warner and Nick Bosa are locked in long-term, but the supporting cast needs attention. Charvarius Ward, a Pro Bowl cornerback, is also set to be a free agent. He signed a three-year, $40.5 million deal in 2022, and he’s lived up to it, with 5 interceptions in 2023. Losing him would be a huge blow.
Beyond Warner, the linebacker room will need some serious thought. Dre Greenlaw signed a two-year, $16.4 million extension in 2022, but he’ll be a free agent in 2026. His Achilles tear in Super Bowl LVIII was devastating, and his recovery will be a major factor in his next contract. The team will have to decide if they can afford to bring back both Ward and Greenlaw, given Purdy’s impending deal. On offense, Brandon Aiyuk's contract is settled for now, but George Kittle, who signed a five-year, $75 million extension in 2020, will be 32 when his deal is up. Real talk, the Niners can’t keep everyone. They've been phenomenal at drafting and developing talent, but the price of success is a tight salary cap. My hot take? They’ll prioritize Purdy and Bosa, and let either Ward or Greenlaw walk. They simply won’t have the room for all of them.
Prediction: The 49ers will extend Brock Purdy for five years, but it will cost them one key defensive starter from their 2023 roster.
